HBE - Building Better Builders since 1959!

Our History

The Humboldt Builders Exchange was formed in Eureka, California in 1959, by a group of local contractors and an Architect. In November of that year the Board of Directors granted permission to operate a plan room for the Exchange to local business owner Alvor D. Olson and Fred Morlan, an industrial relations person from Medford, Oregon.

A plan room was operated in Eureka at various locations under the name of Cal-Ore Builders' Exchange until February 1960, when Olson in partnership with Virgina S. Corse established permanent offices and a plan room under the name of Humboldt Builders' Exchange at 317 W. 7th Street in Eureka. At that time the paid membership totaled 15.

For the next seven weeks complimentary weekly bulletins and free plan services were made available to 300 potential members. By May 1, 1960, the paid membership had increased to 55 and the Humboldt Builders’ Exchange had become a member of the California State Builders Exchanges.

In January 1962 the Board of Directors took over the actual operation of the Exchange with Virginia Corse as manager, and on March 1, 1962, the Exchange moved to 3090 Broadway in Eureka.

On March 13, 1962 the Exchange became a nonprofit corporation. In August 1968, the Exchange moved into 2355 Myrtle Avenue in Eureka, where we remained until November, 2003. In 2002 the Humboldt Builders' Exchange purchased its own building and after extensive remodeling work was completed, the Exchange moved to its own, newly remodeled building at 624 C Street in Eureka.

Today, The Humboldt Builders' Exchange is a vibrant and aggressive association of approximately 310 member firms and an electronic Weekly Bulletin circulation of approximately 370.

As a nonprofit association the Humboldt Builders' Exchange is governed by a 12 member Board of Directors, nominated by and elected from the general membership.  Each Board Member is elected for a three year term and serves on various committees during that time.

And thanks to advances in today's technology, the Humboldt Builders' Exchange now offers its members a valuable new service - H.O.P.S. Humboldt Online Planroom Service - H.O.P.S. - allows subsribers view project documents on their own computer, in their own office via the world wide web. Users can track and create bids on projects available in almost every planroom throughout the state.
